Project Overview
South Quay Plaza is a major mixed-use development on Marsh Wall in the Isle of Dogs, helping to transform the historic docklands surrounding Canary Wharf. Delivered for Berkeley and designed by Foster + Partners, the scheme combines a prominent residential tower with a smaller building that responds to the surrounding streetscape, alongside retail space and a substantial new public plaza. With sustainability embedded into the development strategy, the project targeted a 50% reduction in carbon emissions and incorporated efficient building services, including a connection to the Barkantine district heating network.
The Challenge
Large-scale urban construction projects place finished surfaces under constant pressure from ongoing trades, movement of materials and extended build programmes. At South Quay Plaza, internal glass and other finished surfaces required reliable temporary protection to help prevent scratches, marks and general site damage, while supporting a high-quality final handover. The protection system also needed to be practical for site teams to apply, durable over an extended period and cleanly removable without leaving residue.
The Solution
Spraylat supported the project with Protectapeel GlassDefend, a temporary peelable coating developed to protect internal surfaces for up to 24 months. Suitable for glass as well as aluminium, PVCu, acrylic, stainless steel, painted aluminium and polished concrete, GlassDefend provided an efficient surface protection solution aligned with the needs of a complex construction environment. Easy to apply and designed for residue-free removal, the coating helped safeguard vulnerable finished surfaces throughout the construction phase while maintaining the appearance and quality expected on a landmark development.
