Project Overview

Spraylat International partnered with Musketeer Solutions to trial a temporary protective coating system on a retired Boeing 707 airframe at RAF Waddington. The aircraft, used for training purposes, required reliable preservation during long-term outdoor storage. Using the Protectapeel Preservation System, Spraylat delivered a spray-applied, peelable coating solution designed to protect the airframe against weathering while maintaining its original appearance.

The Challenge

The project required a temporary coating that could preserve the aircraft during external storage without compromising appearance or application efficiency. Musketeer Solutions needed a solution that would withstand weathering, provide durable protection for at least 12 months, and apply effectively across the Boeing 707’s complex curved and shaped surfaces. The coating also needed to avoid adhesion loss over time and be removable without damaging the underlying surface.

The Solution

Spraylat selected the Protectapeel Preservation system, to meet the project requirements. Designed for long-term aerospace storage and preservation, the system was applied directly to the airframe using airless spray equipment, with lambswool rollers used for detailed areas. The coating was colour matched to the aircraft so it remained virtually invisible once applied. As a liquid-applied system, it formed a durable, skin-tight protective film across non-porous surfaces without the need for cutting or shaping, making it well suited to the aircraft’s complex geometry. The system provided a high-performance, low VOC and fully recyclable temporary protection solution aligned with Spraylat’s innovation-led approach.

Results

  • Effective protection of the Boeing 707 airframe during outdoor storage
  • Fast and efficient application across complex aircraft surfaces
  • No visual impact thanks to the colour-matched coating finish
  • Reliable weathering resistance without the need for reapplication during the trial period
  • Simple hand-peel removal, revealing an undamaged surface beneath

Conclusion

This trial at RAF Waddington demonstrated the value of Spraylat’s temporary protective coating technology in aerospace preservation applications. By using Protectapeel Preservation System, Musketeer Solutions achieved a practical, low-impact method of protecting a retired Boeing 707 during outdoor storage. The project highlights how innovative, removable coatings can help preserve high-value assets, reduce maintenance demands and support more efficient long-term storage strategies across aviation and other industrial sectors.
