Project Overview

Channel 4 required a temporary surface protection solution for the concrete flooring and steps outside its head office during a temporary art installation. Protectapeel’s signage protective coating was applied by roller to create a removable barrier between the concrete and the graffiti artwork.

The artwork was painted directly onto the Protectapeel coating, allowing the installation to achieve the required finish without permanently marking the concrete beneath. Once the installation ended, the coating and artwork were simply peeled away together, leaving the original concrete surface clean and restored.

 

The Challenge

The installation involved graffiti-style artwork being applied across external concrete surfaces. A temporary protection solution was required that would allow the artwork to be created without permanently marking or damaging the original concrete.

The Solution

Protectapeel was quickly applied by roller to the concrete flooring and steps, creating a removable protective barrier over the surface. Once dry, the graffiti artwork was painted directly onto the Protectapeel coating rather than the concrete itself. This allowed the installation to achieve the required visual effect while keeping the original surface protected underneath.

When the temporary installation ended, the Protectapeel coating was simply peeled away by hand, removing the artwork along with it. The concrete underneath was left clean and restored to its original appearance, with no need for aggressive cleaning or removal of paint from the substrate.

The project demonstrated how Protectapeel can provide an effective solution for temporary concrete protection, art installations, events and temporary decorative projects where the original surface needs to remain protected.

Product Used

RainDefend Top Coat was applied over the Multi Surface coating to provide additional protection against external weather conditions. Together, the system created a robust temporary surface that could withstand outdoor exposure throughout the installation.

Once the project was complete, the Protectapeel system was peeled away along with the artwork, revealing the original concrete surface clean and protected underneath.
